Disaster Preparedness For Your Pets

In the event of a hurricane, tornado, flood or other natural disaster, Osceola County Animal Control reminds pet owners that, if it isnt safe for you and your families to stay home during a disaster, its not safe for your pets. Families should have a disaster plan in place for themselves including pets in case of evacuation. Since it is unknown how long an evacuation may last, Animal Control suggests you take the following items with you:

  • Plenty of pet food, water and leashes.
  • Your pets identification tags. In case of separation, there is a better chance of finding each other.
  • Pet medications, copies of vaccinations.
  • List of hotels that accept pets. Most evacuation shelters do not allow pets.
  • If your pet is crate-trained, bring the crate. Dogs, especially, are den animals and often feel more comfortable in an enclosed area in stressful situations.

In the case of a disaster other than hurricanes, Animal Control will take in pets on a first come, first serve basis depending on pen availability. Proof of vaccinations is required. For multiple pets from the same home, they will be placed in the same pen to accommodate as many pets as possible.
