The Classification Unit is supported by five staff; this unit is responsible for determining the security custody of every inmate brought to our facility. This is done by considering a persons current charge, criminal history, medical or mental health conditions, as well as institutional behavior. They were responsible for classifying almost 15,000 people in 2008. They are also responsible for maintaining the inmate workers that provide serviced to the jail as well as labor for other County Departments such as Road and Bridge, Parks and Recreation and The 192 Beautification Project. In 2008 alone, the inmate labor used from our facility saved the County tax payers $4.1 million in paid man hours. These inmates’s receive time off their sentence, or gain time, for participating in this function.
