Sewing Seeds for the Future Classes

In October 2007, OCCD acquired $24,000.00 grant funding and expanded the inmate sewing program to include the art of flower arrangement and special community projects. The Sewing Seeds for the Future vocational program provides vocational training to increase the inmate’s economic stability and work readiness skills. This experience promotes a healthy outlet to help the inmate effectively cope with anxiety and daily problem solving. This class also allows inmates to give back to the community by volunteering their services.

Note: Inmates that are sentenced to complete State or County Community Service can sign-up for this class to fulfill their requirements while incarcerated. This class is currently only available to female inmates.

The program has helped support local non-profit organizations such as:

• Give Kids the World
• Local elementary schools
• Girl Scouts of America
• The American Cancer Society
• Help Now of Osceola, Inc.
• Good Samaritan Senior Village

Charitable Projects and Donated Items:

• 13 quilts donated to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation
• 67 pillows donated to Give Kids the World
• 18 small quilts donated to Give Kids the World
• 41 flower arrangements donated to Osceola Council on Aging
• 40 flower arrangements donated to P.M. Wells Charter School
• 500 packages disassembled and sorted for Girl Scouts of America
• 650 tote bags assembled for the American Cancer Society
• 612 information packets were assembled for the American Cancer Society
• 1 queen size “Clothesline Project” quilt donated to Help Now of Osceola, Inc.
• 18 silk flower arrangements donated to Help Now of Osceola, Inc.
• 100 hand made Christmas cards donated to Help Now of Osceola, Inc.
• 840 Christmas cards were folded / stuffed with ornaments for Good Samaritan Senior Village
• 1200 calendars were sorted and stuffed into large enveloped for Good Samaritan Senior Village
