Emergency Management

Preparation

Disaster Kits

It is important to have a disaster kit available at all times. This will help you be prepared should an unexpected event occur resulting in the need to leave you location quickly.

Emergency Food and Water

Even though it is unlikely that an emergency would cut off your food supply for two weeks, consider maintaining a supply that will last that long. Having an ample supply of clean water is a top priority in an emergency. A normally active person needs to drink at least two quarts half gallon of water each day. People in hot environments, children, nursing mothers, and ill people will require even more.

Mitigation

Mitigation is the process or processes which can minimize the impact of disaster. An example might be in a home construct prior to current codes and standards, ask the question, is there an opportunity to increase the strength of the walls or roof structure? Another example might be in a flooding situation, is there something that can be done prior to a disaster to minimize damage caused by flooding?
