Osceola County, Florida – For the first time in the 129-year history of Osceola County, women now make up the majority of the County Commission.
Peggy Choudhry joined Viviana Janer and Cheryl Grieb on the commission after a brief ceremony in the commission chambers on Tuesday. Commissioners Brandon Arrington and Fred Hawkins, Jr. were sworn in for their third terms on the board.
Choudhry, who has a background in law enforcement and in the hospitality industry, was sworn-in by Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer.
“I am so humbled by the confidence so many people have shown me and by the support I have received. I’m eager to work together with this board and the community to build a better future for everyone in our county,” said Choudhry, only the fourth woman to be elected to the 5-person board. “You can make a huge difference through public service. I hope that my election helps empower women and others in this community.”
Arrington, an Osceola native and executive director of Osceola Arts, was sworn in as the District 3 commissioner by his mother, Mary Jane Arrington, who is the current Supervisor of Elections. Mrs. Arrington also was the first woman to ever serve on the County Commission.
“It’s an honor to serve my community for a third term. I’m ready to continue working hard on the issues that are important for our residents, such as improving transportation options and creating more educational opportunities that will lead to better jobs,” said Arrington. “Alleviating homelessness and making sure all families in our community are safe remain top priorities for myself and this board.”
In District 5, Hawkins looked ahead after being sworn-in by outgoing Osceola County Sheriff Bob Hansell.
“I am grateful for the overwhelming support from the community and I’m optimistic about what we can accomplish in the next four years,” said Hawkins. “This election was about continuing to move forward with growth that protects the environment and our neighborhoods. My leadership is consistently driven by the community, and I look forward to continuing to build a future we will all be proud of not just in four years – but 20 or 30 years from now.”
The Board of County Commissioners will select a new chair and vice chair on December 12. Janer, the current chair, welcomed the opportunities ahead and noted the historical nature of having a majority of women on the board.
“This is a very momentous time for the county. While women often face numerous obstacles in achieving representation, I hope that the fact that a majority of this board are women will inspire others to follow in our footsteps,” she said. “Moving forward, I expect us all to work through the issues with deliberation, respect and a diversity of thought, ultimately doing what we believe is right for all the citizens of Osceola County.”
