Due to several recent cold weather periods resulting in extremely dry vegetation and creating conditions that fuel wildfires, Osceola County issued a burn ban on December 12, 2010. In the last month, unincorporated Osceola County has had several wildfires due to carelessness that threatened homes and businesses near Kissimmee and St. Cloud.
Osceola County Fire Rescue, in conjunction with Orange County Fire Rescue, assisted the Division of Forestry in extinguishing a five-acre brush fire today near Ron Road in Narcoossee. Several pole barns were lost in the fire, however, no other structures were damaged and there were no injuries. The State Fire Marshal is en route to determine the cause of the fire.
In observance of the Christmas holiday, Osceola County Administration offices and the Osceola County Courthouse will be closed on Friday, December 24th and Monday, December 27th.
At their regular Board meeting last Monday, Osceola County Commissioners voted unanimously to direct staff to draft an ordinance imposing a 12-month moratorium on the collection of transportation impact fees for all new non-residential construction or expansion.
The Central Florida Council, Boy Scouts of America is proud to announce the awarding of the Bobcat Badge to 21 new Cub Scouts. Pack 697's Bobcat Ceremony will be held on Friday, December 17, at 5:30 p.m. at the Apopka Family Learning Center. Pack 697 was initiated by the Central Florida Council's Hispanic Initiatives program and is chartered by the Apopka Family Learning Center's after school educational program, Kids in Motion. The boys, between the ages of six and ten, will receive their Bobcat Badge - the first badge a Cub Scout may earn.
As part of the ongoing road widening project on Poinciana Boulevard, traffic will be shifted between Crescent Lakes Way north to US 17/92 on Wednesday, December 22nd and Thursday, December 23rd, weather permitting.
Due to work being conducted by BrightHouse, there will be lane shifts on Thacker Avenue between Verona Street and Bruce Street starting tonight. The lane shifts will take place between the hours of 7:00 p.m. – 5:00 a.m. and are expected to last about a week.
As the Three Kings travel to Bethlehem they will make a brief stop in Osceola County for a press conference scheduled at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, December 16 in front of the Osceola County Administration Building.
This week Osceola County Animal Control received reports of Parvovirus disease in two dogs. Parvo, as it is known, is a highly preventable disease through annual vaccinations. Symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration, bloody stools and in severe cases, fever and lowered white blood cell count. The disease progresses rapidly and death can occur within a few days.
At a special meeting held prior to their regular Board Meeting on December 6, 2010, Osceola County Commissioners elected Commissioner Brandon Arrington as Chairman and Commissioner John Quiñones as Vice Chairman of the Osceola County Board of County Commissioners for the upcoming year, effective immediately.
On December 1, Animal Control received a call reporting a cat inside a vacant home in Poinciana. An Animal Control Officer was dispatched immediately to the location and observed the cat inside the home. After numerous failed attempts to determine if the cat's owner was also inside the home, the officer left the premises and began the procedure to obtain a search warrant to legally enter the residence.
The Osceola County Board of County Commissioners terminated the contracts of County Attorney Jo Thacker and Commission Auditor Kathy Wall by a vote of 3-2 at yesterday's Board of County Commission meeting.
The road widening project of Osceola Parkway from four to six lanes between the Florida Turnpike and Buenaventura Boulevard was granted Substantial Completion on November 24, 2010. While all lanes are now open to traffic, there is minimal work still to be completed which will require temporary lane closures.
