Aerial Mosquito Spraying in Osceola County

Important tool to control public health risk
Osceola County, Florida – In response to excessive rainfall, Osceola County Mosquito Control plans to resume the aerial spraying of approximately 17,000 acres Thursday, August 9th between the hours of 8 p.m. and midnight. These applications will complete the original treatment area, which spanned approximately 50,000 acres of mostly rural Osceola County.
Spraying will take place over the course of three days and treat the following areas (see the blue shaded portions of the attached map): Deer Park, Ham Brown, Hickory Tree, Kenansville, Holopaw, Harmony, Yeehaw Junction and Southport.
In the event weather prohibits aerial treatment, alternate days will be August 12 through August 14, within the same hours of operation. Mosquito Control also will continue to provide ground treatment via spray truck throughout the County as weather permits. Note: Ground treatments are not conducted when it is raining or if the winds are at 10 miles per hour or greater.
Aerial spraying is important in controlling the mosquito population, as the insects pose a public health risk. As part of the aerial spraying process, Osceola County notifies the agricultural community.
The Osceola County Health Department recommends citizens check rain gutters and other objects in their yards and around their homes for standing water, and flush out birdbaths every three days. For outdoor nighttime activities, the use of insect repellent containing DEET is recommended, as well as wearing long sleeves and pants. When returning indoors, be sure to wash off the insect repellent.
Drain and Cover:
- Don’t go outdoors at DUSK and DAWN when mosquitoes are most active.
- DRESS to cover bare skin, with long sleeves and pants
- Use mosquito repellants containing DEET (N,N-diethyl-meta-toluamide, or N,N-diethyl-3-ethylbenzamide) on skin and clothing. Picaridin and oil of lemon eucalyptus are other repellent options. Always read the manufacturer’s directions carefully before using a repellant, and make sure the repellant is age appropriate.
- DUMP any container around your home that is able to hold water

Condado de Osceola, Florida -- En respuesta al exceso de lluvias, el Departamento de Control de Mosquitos del Condado de Osceola planifica comenzar fumigación aérea en aproximadamente 17,000 acres este jueves, 9 de agosto entre las horas de 8 p.m. hasta la medianoche. Esta fumigación completará el área de tratamiento original, que abarcaba aproximadamente 50,000 acres mayormente del área rural del condado de Osceola.

Nota: No se realizan tratamientos por tierra cuando llueve o si los vientos son de 10 millas por hora o más.
La fumigación aérea es importante para controlar la población de mosquitos, ya que los insectos representan un riesgo para la salud pública. Como parte del proceso de fumigación aérea, el Condado de Osceola notifica a la comunidad agrícola.
El Departamento de Salud del Condado de Osceola recomienda a los ciudadanos a verificar si hay aguas estancadas en sus canales de lluvia, objetos en sus patios y alrededor de sus casas y cambiar los bebederos de aves cada tres días. Escurra y cubra:
- No salir a la calle al anochecer y el amanecer, cuando los mosquitos están más activos
- VESTIMENTA que cubra su piel, con mangas largas y pantalones
- Use repelentes de mosquitos que contenga DEET (N, N-dietil-meta-toluamida, o N, N-dietil-3-etilbenzamida) sobre la piel y la ropa. Picaridin y aceite de eucalipto de limón son otras opciones de repelentes. Lea siempre las instrucciones del fabricantecuidadosamente antes de usar un repelente, y asegúrese de que el repelente es apropiado para su edad.
- VACIE los recipientes alrededor de su casa que puedan retener el agua
