Osceola County Improving Protections of Kings Highway Bridge

Osceola County, Florida – A project to strengthen and protect the Kings Highway bridge over the Partin Canal was approved Monday by County Commissioners.
Once it begins, the project will take approximately 60 days to complete, and including contingencies has a budget of $292,000. The steel stringer bridge over the canal has a span of approximately 25 feet and was built in 1973. Thousands travel it daily.
“We are taking a proactive approach by doing this work to prevent any issues for those who are so thoroughly dependent on Kings Highway for their livelihoods,” said Commissioner Cheryl Grieb, the commissioner for District 4 where the bridge is located. “The bridge is a key link for so many residents, who probably never think twice about how closely tied their daily routines are to the connections it provides. By strengthening the bridge, they won’t have to worry about the security of this lifeline.”
The work will take place off of the roadways and should not present any significant impacts to traffic. The County urges motorists to pay attention to workers in the area and to obey any temporary signage or instructions that may be in effect during the project.
The purpose of the project is to reinforce the bridge and preclude further “scour” from undermining the structure. Scour is a term for the erosion of soil surrounding a bridge foundation (piers and abutments). Bridge scour occurs when fast-moving water under a bridge removes sediment from around the bridge foundation, leaving behind scour holes. These holes, in turn, could compromise the bridge’s integrity.
The project will use rip rap, a rocky material that is used to prevent erosion and scour along shorelines and bridge foundations.

El propósito de este proyecto es reforzar el puente para prevenir la socavación de la estructura. Socavación es un término para la erosión de tierra alrededor de la fundación del puente (pilotes y estribos). La socavación ocurre en los puentes cuando el agua corre muy rápido alrededor del puente y remueve tierra de la fundación dejando huecos. Estos huecos pueden comprometer la integridad del puente.
El proyecto usará “rip rap”, un material hecho de piedras de cierto tamaño para prevenir la erosión y la socavación a lo largo de las orillas y la fundación del puente.
