Osceola County Responds to Residents in Need at Star Motel

Osceola County, Florida – As conditions continue to diminish at Kissimmee’s Star Motel, Osceola County’s Human Services Department is working to secure safe accommodations for the property’s residents in partnership with local organizations.  Community Hope Center, Homeless Services Network and Health Care Center for the Homeless have been working with families that continue to live at the Star Motel without power or water.

Over the previous days, the County worked with the Community Hope Center to secure accommodations for families with children, providing the funding for the rehousing. Even as fourteen families have been relocated to other area hotels, additional families and individuals still need to be transitioned from the Star Motel.  For those residents that are willing to accept assistance, the County’s Human Services team will continue to work with area non-profits to secure stable dwellings.

“We appreciate our local non-profits that have stepped up to help these residents in dire situations at the Star Motel, and we are thankful the County was able to partner with them to place families into safer, healthier living conditions this week,” said Osceola Commission Chairwoman Viviana Janer. “However, we know there is more work to be done and help that is needed for others in similar circumstances. We ultimately want to help these homeless families become self-sufficient to improve their overall quality of life for years to come.”

The County’s Human Services staff has been going to the Star Motel and neighboring Lake Cecile Inn and Suites to provide assistance since December 2019. In previous months alone, the County has conducted two major trash removal efforts at both properties, including the removal of abandoned vehicles.  Additionally, vacant rooms that could not be secured at Lake Cecile Inn and Suites were boarded up, and the same process will be done at Star Motel.

“The County is committed to the well-being of our residents and believe everyone deserves a safe place to call ‘home’,” said Osceola Commission Vice Chairwoman Cheryl Grieb. “Affordable housing is a basic need for our community and the County continues to seek solutions and identify opportunities to establish stable living situations for more families in transition.”

Additionally, the County’s Human Services department set up a phone extension hotline for the families to call if they are in need of assistance. That number has been provided to those impacted.

It is important to note that the problems at Star Motel and Lake Cecile Inn and Suites began before the COVID-19 pandemic impacted Osceola County, with the property owner failing to pay utilities. Star Motel currently owes $14,827 to Kissimmee Utility Authority (electricity) and $90,118 to Toho Water Authority (water). 

El Condado de Osceola Responde a los Residentes Necesitados en el Star Motel

Condado Osceola County, Florida – A medida que las condiciones continúan disminuyendo en el Star Motel de Kissimmee, el Departamento de Servicios Humanos del Condado de Osceola está trabajando para asegurar alojamiento seguro para los residentes de la propiedad en asociación con la asistencia de organizaciones locales. Community Hope Center, Homeless Services Network y Health Care Center for the Homeless han estado trabajando con familias que continúan viviendo en el Star Motel sin electricidad ni agua.

En los días anteriores, el Condado trabajó con Community Hope Center para asegurar alojamiento para familias con niños, proporcionando los fondos para la revivienda. Incluso cuando catorce familias han sido reubicadas a otros hoteles de la zona, otras familias y personas aún necesitan ser transitadas del Star Motel. “Apreciamos a nuestras organizaciones sin fines de lucro locales que se han esforzado para ayudar a estos residentes en situaciones extremas en el Star Motel, y estamos agradecidos de que el Condado haya podido asociarse con ellos para colocar a catorce familias en condiciones de vida más seguras y saludables esta semana,” dijo la Presidenta de la Comisión de Osceola, Viviana Janer. “Sin embargo, sabemos que hay más trabajo que hacer y ayuda que se necesita para otras personas en circunstancias similares. En última instancia, queremos ayudar a estas familias sin hogar a ser autosuficientes para mejorar su calidad de vida en general en los próximos años."

El personal de Servicios Humanos del Condado ha estado yendo al Star Motel y el vecino Lake Cecile Inn and Suites para proporcionar asistencia, desde diciembre de 2019. Solo en meses anteriores, el Condado ha llevado a cabo dos grandes esfuerzos de eliminación de basura en ambas propiedades, incluyendo la remoción de vehículos abandonados. Además, las habitaciones vacías que no pudieron ser aseguradas en Lake Cecile Inn and Suites fueron embarcadas. El mismo proceso se hará en Star Motel.

"El Condado está comprometido con el bienestar de nuestros residentes y cree que todo el mundo merece un lugar seguro para llamar 'hogar'," dijo la Vicepresidenta de la Comisión de Osceola, Cheryl Grieb. "La vivienda asequible es una necesidad básica para nuestra comunidad y el Condado continúa buscando soluciones e identificando oportunidades para establecer situaciones de vida estables para más familias en transición."

Además, el Departamento de Servicios Humanos del Condado estableció una línea directa de extensión telefónica para que las familias llamen si necesitan ayuda. Ese número se ha proporcionado a los afectados.

Es importante tener en cuenta que los problemas en el Star Motel y Lake Cecile Inn and Suites comenzaron antes de que la pandemia de COVID-19 impactó el Condado de Osceola. Star Motel actualmente debe $14,827 a Kissimmee Utility Authority (electricidad) y $90,118 a Toho Water Authority (agua).
