Prescribed Burn Scheduled for Camp Lonesome Today & Wednesday

Please be advised that the County’s prescribed fire contractor is looking at doing a burn this morning (6-16-20) and Wednesday at Camp Lonesome.

Because conditions were good on Tuesday, the contractor plans to continue on Wednesday, which is expected to be the the last burn for the fiscal year.

Work could begin around 10 a.m. and is expected to be be completed by 3 p.m. Camp Lonesome is located at 4257 North Canoe Creek Road in Kenansville.

The property is 2,443 acres in size and accessible by reservation only. Approximately 75% of the Camp Lonesome ecosystem is fire-dependent, meaning it requires prescribed fire to properly maintain the land.

Osceola County, Florida – Please be advised that the County’s prescribed fire contractor is looking at doing a burn this morning (6-16-20) at Camp Lonesome.

The property is 2,443 acres in size and accessible by reservation only. The property was previously used for cattle production.

Approximately 75% of the Camp Lonesome ecosystem is fire-dependent, meaning it requires prescribed fire to properly maintain the land. Fire opens the understory for new vegetation growth and returns carbon to the soil, which enriches the soil for further growth. Prescribed fire also reduces the fire load, therefore reducing the threat of wildfires.

Safely-controlled prescribed fire techniques improve and maintain habitats for many wildlife species. Such fires are an effective management tool that reduces risk of uncontrolled wildfire, improves access to the land and provides better recreational opportunities, while enhancing the beauty of the land.
