Steffee Landing Re-Opening Expands Recreational Opportunities on Shingle Creek

Osceola County, Florida - The urban oasis that is Shingle Creek Regional Park offers residents and visitors even more recreational opportunities with Friday's re-opening of Steffee Landing.

Bike, canoe, kayak and paddleboard rentals are now available. The rental concession will be operated by Kissimmee River Kayak LLC., a local county outfitter specializing in canoe and kayak trips for more than15 years. Beside rentals for individuals, the outfitter will also offer guided tours, group specials and lessons.

"Having recently explored the area from Marsh Landing north to Steffee Landing, I can say that Shingle Creek offers an adventure and a glimpse of nature that is joyful experience for residents and visitors alike." said Commissioner Michael Harford, whose district includes the park at the headwaters of the Everglades. "Overall, the park improvements really enhance the usability of the facility, while retaining and emphasizing the historic scope of the area. The work is really putting a shine on this Osceola County jewel."

New park amenities include:

• A fishing pier
• The Paddling Center
• Restrooms and vending machines
• A bridge across Shingle Creek connecting visitors to Historic Steffee Homestead and the Caretaker House
• Interpretive signage

The Shingle Creek Paddling Trail will eventually encompass approximately 10 miles. The trail includes a mile north of U.S. Highway 192 and 9 miles of trail south, eventually linking Shingle Creek with Makinson Island, Twin Oaks, Cherokee Point and Scotty's Cove Conservation Areas on Lake Toho.

From Steffee Landing beginning paddlers will be directed to the section of the creek north of U.S. 192 where the creek is wide and easiest to navigate. That paddling trail section terminates at the site of the re-located Osceola County Historical Society's Pioneer Village at Shingle Creek -- scheduled to open later this year.

For more advanced paddlers, the creek south of U.S. 192, offers a wide variety of adventure and challenges for users. This area includes narrow passageways through cypress tree-lined banks and a meandering backwater trail.

Guided "Everglades Headwater" tours will also be offered for the most adventuresome wanting to paddle from U.S. 192 to the mouth of the creek and Lake Toho.

Created through a partnership with Osceola County, City of Kissimmee, South Florida Water Management District, Florida Department of Environmental Protection, Florida Communities Trust, Florida Department of Greenways and Trails, Trust for Public Land and the Osceola County Historical Society, Shingle Creek Regional Park has become the urban oasis envisioned by the partners for the benefit and enjoyment of the community.

"The opening of Steffee Landing is the latest piece to a very impressive assemblage of critical conservation and recreational lands envisioned by, and executed through, a collaborative effort between the Department of Environmental Protection and Osceola County," said Rick Mercer, DEP's director of operations. "The Shingle Creek Regional Park is an absolute win for residents and visitors of Osceola County and for the Florida Communities Trust grant program."
