Janer: Osceola is Remarkable, Resilient and Determined

Osceola County, Florida – Thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic, 2020 has been the year of virtual communication. So it should not have been a surprise when Commission Chairwoman Viviana Janer delivered her 2nd State of Osceola address virtually this week.

“In spite of all the hardships, the state of Osceola County is remarkable, resilient and determined,” Janer said during a streaming event over social media on Wednesday, several months after the traditional April program had been delayed. “Osceola County is a place that in spite of 2020’s challenges remains at the crossroads of progress and opportunity.”

Among the positives Janer noted:

• The Osceola Green Initiative with steps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and their harmful effects by 2060.
• Purchase of land for conservation and recreation, affordable housing and new fire stations.
• A wave of transportation projects funded by more than $210 million.
• Successful economic development efforts, such as the new AmeraCenter, expansion of production at the Gatorade plant, and negotiations with Skywater to manage the Center for Neovation at NeoCity.
• Allocation of millions of dollars of CARES Act funds for to fight food insecurity, provide housing and business assistance, as well as job training and 3,800 computers the school district will use for distance learning.

The State of the County began in 2013 as Osceola emerged from the Great Recession. From the start it has served as a status report on the community and the County’s victory lap. This year a large part addressed the COVID-19 pandemic and its effect on the County. Most County offices remain closed though staff has continued to assist the public.

“Our staff has found new ways to deliver service, to keep Osceola functioning, and they have done it with pride and professionalism. I am so very proud of everyone’s efforts,” Janer said.

The Ninth Judicial Circuit is scheduled begin in-person trials next week. And many County workers will return to their offices in November as the Governor moves the State into Phase 3. County officials hope that everyone will return to normal work schedules and reopen buildings in the next few months.

Started last year, the Chair’s awards are recognition to a business and individual by the previous year’s chair. This year the picks were made by Commissioner Cheryl Grieb. They are:

• REACH: The local inbound marketing firm has established itself in the community, both with paid clients and public service by transforming how organizations attract, engage and delight customers.
• MARK DURBIN – Before his retirement, Mark was the City Manager of Kissimmee known for his collaboration and leadership. After retirement he continued to dedicate his time and talent to various groups in the community. He recently lost a long battle with cancer.

Condado Osceola, Florida – Gracias a la pandemia del COVID-19, 2020 ha sido el año de la comunicación virtual. Por lo tanto, no debería haber sido una sorpresa cuando la Presidenta de la Comisión, Viviana Janer, pronunció su segundo discurso sobre el estado de Osceola virtualmente esta semana.

“A pesar de todas las dificultades, el estado del Condado de Osceola es notable, resiliente y decidido,” dijo Janer durante un evento de transmisión en las redes sociales, el miércoles, varios meses después de que el programa tradicional de abril se hubiera retrasado. “El Condado de Osceola es un lugar que, a pesar de los desafíos de 2020, sigue en la encrucijada del progreso y las oportunidades.”

Entre los aspectos positivos Janer señaló:

• El Osceola Green Initiative-- con medidas para reducir las emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero y sus efectos nocivos para 2060.
• Compra de terrenos para conservación y recreación, viviendas asequibles y nuevas estaciones de bomberos.
• Una ola de proyectos de transporte financiados por más de $210 millones.
• Esfuerzos exitosos de desarrollo económico como el nuevo AmeraCenter, la expansión de producción en la planta de Gatorade y las negociaciones con Skywater para administrar el Center for Neovation en NeoCity.
• Asignación de millones de dólares de fondos de la Ley Federal CARES para combatir la inseguridad alimentaria, proporcionar asistencia de vivienda y comercial, así como capacitación laboral y 3,800 computadoras que el Distrito Escolar utilizará para el aprendizaje a distancia.

El Estado del Condado comenzó en 2013 cuando Osceola emergió de la gran recesión. Desde el principio, ha servido como un informe de estado sobre la comunidad y sus victorias. Este año una gran parte se ocupó de la pandemia de COVID-19 y su efecto en el Condado. La mayoría de las oficinas del condado permanecen cerradas aunque el personal continúa ayudando al público.

“Nuestro personal ha encontrado nuevas formas de prestar servicio, de mantener a Osceola funcionando, y lo han hecho con orgullo y profesionalismo. Estoy muy orgullosa de los esfuerzos de todos,” dijo Janer.

El Noveno Circuito Judicial está programado para comenzar los juicios en persona la próxima semana. Y muchos trabajadores del Condado regresarán a sus oficinas en noviembre, mientras el Gobernador mueve al Estado a la Fase 3. Los funcionarios del condado esperan que todos vuelvan a horarios normales de trabajo y reabran los edificios al público en los próximos meses.

Los premios de la Cátedra, que comenzaron el año pasado, reconocen a un negocio y a un individuo por parte de la Presidenta del año anterior. Este año, la Comisionada Cheryl Grieb hizo las selecciones. Son:

• REACH: La empresa local de marketing se ha establecido en la comunidad, tanto con clientes pagados y servicio público, transformando la forma en que las organizaciones atraen y deleitan a los clientes.
• MARK DURBIN: Antes de su retiro, Mark fue el Gerente de la ciudad de Kissimmee conocido por su colaboración y liderazgo. Después de su retiro continuó dedicando su tiempo y talento a varios grupos de la comunidad. Recientemente perdió una larga batalla contra el cáncer.
