Osceola County, Florida – Please be advised that the County’s prescribed fire contractor is looking at doing a burn Friday morning on Makinson Island.

A factor that will weigh in the decision is how much, if any, rainfall the area receives overnight.

The work could begin around 10 a.m. and would be completed by 3 p.m. The dock and amenities will still be available to the public but the hiking trail around the perimeter will be closed during the event.

Makinson Island is a 132-acre property in Lake Tohopekaliga that offers primitive group camping by permit only. All visitors must provide their own transportation to and from the island.

Safely-controlled prescribed fire techniques improve and maintain habitats for many wildlife species. Such fires are an effective management tool that reduces risk of uncontrolled wildfire, improves access to the land and provides better recreational opportunities, while enhancing the beauty of the land.
