Trip to South Korea Strengthens Links to NEOCITY

Osceola County, Florida – A trip targeted at some of the giants of South Korea’s high-tech industry is already paying dividends for NEOCITY – Osceola County’s thriving 500-acre technology district.

Osceola County Commissioner Cheryl Grieb led the trade mission and was joined by Congressman Darren Soto, members of the U.S. Embassy, the American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham) and NeoCity Links.

“This was my second trip to South Korea and I feel like we are really establishing important relationships that will help push NEOCITY to the next level,” said Grieb. “The South Korean DNA is wired for entrepreneurship and their track record in the technology field is a perfect fit for the things we are trying to establish here in Osceola County. I’m optimistic that this connection will deliver many benefits for our community.”

Among the successes:

• Pending establishment of a soft-landing program in NEOCITY for medium-sized enterprises from Pangyo and Sungnam, known as centers of technology and industry in South Korea.
• Osceola County is facilitating two confidential proposals to locate to NEOCITY.
• It is also working to establish a Global Campus of SKKU – a private research university – along with an agreement with LG CNS for a digital master plan. The digital master plan for the City Center will be created by a new smart city development team created in LG CNS, spearheaded by Seo Kim.
• Also in the works are agreements for a NEOCITY “Experience Center” and “City Center.” The Experience Center would showcase future technology and the City Center would be a “downtown” of about 25 acres featuring a mix of “live, learn, work and play” aspects.

Grieb and Soto met with more than 70 dignitaries and business leaders at a reception co-hosted by AmCham and the U.S. Embassy. Guests included LG CNS, KT, Hanhwa, as well as governmental and educational leaders.

“We look forward to learning more about NEOCITY’s vision on creating a smart city, and I hope today’s event will lead to a stronger partnership between the two countries,” said James Kim, president of AmCham.

NeoCity Links has been making inroads with businesses in Korea since 2019 and works with the Osceola County Korea office and Osceola County officials to bring Korean investment to NeoCity.

As part of the development of a Smart City – Grieb made two significant stops as Osceola seeks cooperation on its initiatives with South Korean companies.

She visited Pangyo and the LG ThinQ House. Pangyo is a master-planned city known as the Silicon Valley of Korea. Industry focus on information technology, biotech and cultural technology.

LG invested $7 million in the design and construction of the LG Smart Home. LG built the four-story house filled with latest smart-home technologies and solutions including: facial recognition, UV sanitation, home appliances, smart walls and mirrors, an environmental controls for temperature and humidity that analyzes the levels to provide a clean indoor environment, and solar panels with an energy storage system.

Another significant meeting was with the Mayor Daeho Choi of Anyang City, home of Smart Square, a 62-acre district that is home to 90 tech companies and employs 9,000 people with an annual revenue of $9 billion. Home to DS Semicon, Smart Square is a successful mixed-use development that includes tech industries, residential, and retail.

Grieb met with the founder and CEO of DS Semicon as well as the president of a company that provides data security, including for the Hyundai Motor Company. Its president, Peter Shin, supports and funds technology start-ups. As a final part of the visit, Grieb visited SKKU – a private university that has a long partnership with Samsung. Discussions included establishing SKKU’s Global Campus and R&D Center in NEOCITY focused on ICT (information and communications technology) and AI.

In another meeting Grieb discussed Korea’s initiatives and funding for Korean investment in the United States with a long-time member of the National Assembly.

Viaje a Corea del Sur Fortalece Vínculos con NEOCITY 

Condado Osceola, Florida – Un viaje dirigido a algunos de los gigantes de la industria de alta tecnología de Corea del Sur ya está pagando dividendos para NEOCITY, el próspero distrito tecnológico de 500 acres del condado de Osceola. 

La Comisionada del Condado Osceola Cheryl Grieb dirigió la misión comercial y se unió al Congresista Darren Soto, miembros de la Embajada de los Estados Unidos, la Cámara de Comercio Americana (AmCham) y NeoCity Links.
